The Benefits of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that inhibit the process of oxidation. In the human body, antioxidants help to keep us healthy by protecting cells against free radicals, a by-product of oxidation.

Antioxidants are usually consumed through a healthy diet containing plenty of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidant-rich plant foods include:

      • Grapes (in particular the skin of red grapes)
      • Berries including mulberries and blueberries
      • Nuts, particularly walnuts
      • Leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli, and kale

Dark chocolate and red wine are also commonly known for being rich in antioxidants. However, the amount of red wine one would have to consume in order to reach the recommended dose of resveratrol would be prohibitive. In general, a diet that includes a wide variety of plant-based foods will allow you to consume a healthy amount of antioxidants.

Understanding Antioxidants

Antioxidants play a role in supporting cells by neutralising free radicals. Free radicals are molecules with an unpaired valence electron, making them chemically unstable. Antioxidants help stabilize these molecules by donating some of their own electrons.

In terms of measurable health outcomes, antioxidants can help to prevent disease. Observational studies have found that people who consume antioxidant-rich foods (mostly fruit and vegetables) have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. However, these effects may also be partially attributed to lifestyle, as observational studies do not control for confounding factors such as exercise and smoking.

What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in red grape skins, grape seeds, blueberries, cacao, and peanuts. It belongs to a group of compounds called polyphenols, which are noted for their antioxidant properties.

Resveratrol and Wellbeing

While research continues, resveratrol is thought to support healthy ageing and contribute to overall wellbeing. Some studies suggest it may support aspects of heart and metabolic health, but more research is needed to fully understand its effects.

Resveratrol has limited water solubility, which can affect how well it is absorbed by the body. This may partly explain differing results in scientific studies.

Resveratrol is generally considered safe when consumed in moderate amounts as part of a balanced diet or through supplements

Resveratrol Supplements

Resveratrol is available as a dietary supplement, often extracted from natural sources such as red grape skins or Japanese knotweed.

While some supplements provide resveratrol on its own, many modern formulations combine it with other plant-based antioxidants to support overall wellbeing and help the body manage everyday oxidative stress.

The Res-V range offers two options depending on your needs:

  • Res-V Plus is a foundational formula combining resveratrol with ingredients like turmeric, green tea and red grape skin to support wellbeing.
  • Res-V Ultimate is a higher-strength formula with increased resveratrol, plus added grape seed extract and pine bark for more comprehensive antioxidant support.

Choosing Resveratrol Supplements

With many options available, consider the following when selecting a resveratrol supplement:

  • Purity levels around 98%

  • Use of whole grape skins for better potency

  • Preference for trans-resveratrol, which is more biologically active

  • Labels stating “resveratrol” rather than “red wine complex”

Possible Side Effects

Resveratrol supplements are generally well tolerated. Some individuals may experience mild side effects such as nausea or abdominal discomfort.

If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.

Always follow the product’s directions for use.
