Summer Fatigue? Here's Why You Feel Tired

People often think the warmer seasons mean endless energy with longer days, sunny skies, and outdoor fun. But for some, the heat and activity bring an unexpected visitor: fatigue. Have you ever spent a day out in the sun, whether that’s going for a walk or reading a book and you left feeling like you need a nap? If so, you have experienced summer fatigue and here’s why, and how you can prevent it.

Our body’s ability to maintain a stable internal temperature is essential for functioning at our best. However, during summer, the heat puts extra stress on this process, requiring our body to work harder to stay cool. This effort can deplete your energy, especially as sweating- your body’s natural cooling mechanism. Without proper replenishment, this can quickly result in dehydration, leaving you feeling drained even on the sunniest days.  Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during the day.

Summer days and warmer nights can throw off your sleep schedule and make it difficult to get quality sleep. The extended daylight hours often make it harder to wind down in the evening, while the warmer nights can create an uncomfortable sleeping environment. To combat this, try black-out curtains to block out the earlier light hours. Keep your room cool by using a fan or using lightweight bedding to improve comfort. For additional support, natural supplements like Lester’s Night Cap contain ingredients such as lavender, valerian root, chamomile and more to support relaxation restful sleep.

During the summer, frequent allergens include pollen, grass and mould, which can cause sneezing, itchy eyes and exhaustion. When your body reacts to certain allergens, it produces inflammatory chemicals which can deplete your energy. Certain foods like apples and onions contain compounds that have been traditionally associated with supporting the body's natural response to seasonal changes. As well as local honey that may help your body gradually adapt to seasonal pollen, reducing allergic reactions over time.

People naturally tend to consume lighter meals during warmer months. This is either because there are so many seasonal, fresh things accessible, such as fruit and veg, or it's just that hot weather makes heavier meals less appetising. At the end of the day, it all comes down to listening to your body and choosing what feels right for you. As long as you are getting the proper nutrients your body needs to give you energy. It's best to eat a variety of protein, healthy fats, and plenty of fresh veggies. To avoid those mid-afternoon slumps, try incorporating energy-boosting snacks like nuts, seeds, or yoghurt throughout the day.

Summer fatigue is common, but understanding its causes and making small lifestyle adjustments can help you feel your best throughout the season. Listening to your body and making mindful choices will go a long way in enjoying a vibrant and energised summer.
