Supplements and Blood Thinners: What You Should Know
Supplements and Blood Thinners: What You Should Know
We have always written on the bottles of Res-V and Lester’s Oil a warning; don’t use if on strong blood thinners. We have had huge numbers of customers concerned about this and asking us if that was a ‘hard and fast’ rule or whether there are exceptions.
Our approach with our labels and fact sheets has been to err on the side of caution, but in this case there is a long version… so here’s the low down…
Some supplements are known to have natural properties that may influence how blood flows. These include ingredients like garlic, turmeric (curcumin), Co-Enzyme Q10, St John’s Wort, vitamin E, and fish oil, this is just a tiny selection of supplements and foods that can have this effect. This effect may well be part of the reason that certain supplements have beneficial effects for human health, such as fish oil’s support for heart health.
If You’re Taking Blood Thinners
Some nutrients and herbal extracts—including fish oil, garlic, turmeric (curcumin), and vitamin E—are known to have a natural blood-flow supporting effect. While this may be one way they support circulation and general wellness, it’s also why we suggest caution.
This advice is especially important for anyone taking prescription medications that may influence blood properties.
An Individualised Approach
Everyone’s health profile is different. If you have a personal or family history involving blood-related concerns, we recommend seeking personalised guidance from a trusted healthcare provider who is aware of the supplements you’re taking.
In some cases, your doctor may simply want to keep an eye on things. That’s a great way to enjoy the benefits of natural health while keeping everything balanced and well-supported.
Our Bottom Line
This guidance is about staying informed and transparent with your healthcare team. We believe supplements can play a valuable role in supporting everyday wellbeing—but only when used responsibly.
If in doubt, speak with a health professional you trust—and make sure they know what you’re taking.
