A surprising new study published in the FASEB Journal suggests that resveratrol, the popular known compound found in red wine, may prevent the negative effects that spaceflight and inactive lifestyles have on people. The study, which compared two groups of rats in parallel environments to that of astronauts, found that the suspended rats suffered from reduced muscles mass, strength, loss of bone mineral density and a development of insulin resistance, whilst the other group, that were fed resveratrol daily, did not display any of the negative effects. The new findings seem to confirm the longstanding potential health benefits associated with moderate red wine consumption, famously known as the 'French Paradox' - The French have lower rates of heart disease, despite a diet high in saturated fat, smoking and significant amounts of coffee. Many scientists believe that while resveratrol alone offers potential health benefits, it is more likely that the phenomenon of the French Paradox is due to a combination of substances found in red grape skin, and subsequently red wine that include resveratrol, along with a significant list of other compounds.
Exercise in a bottle?
"There are overwhelming data showing that the human body needs physical activity, but for some of us, getting that activity isn't easy”, said Gerald Weissmann, Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal.
