Citrus Bioflavonoids - How they help fight stress

Vitamin C and other plant-derived vitamins are well known as an important part of our diets, but a group of lesser known compounds, known as flavonoids or bioflavonoids, have more recently received recognition for their central role in supporting overall health.. These plant-based nutrients support the absorption of vitamin C and may help reduce oxidative stress and support healthy ageing.

What are bioflavonoids?

Citrus bioflavonoids are part of a larger family of flavonoids. There are many different flavonoids, all with various benefits. What they share is their antioxidant activity — naturally found in plants to help protect against environmental damage.

Flavonoids are commonly grouped into types such as isoflavones, flavones, flavonols, flavanones, catechins, anthocyanins and others. Thousands of naturally occurring flavonoids have been identified. Common citrus-derived bioflavonoids include quercetin, rutin, tangeritin, diosmin, hesperidin and naringin. You’ll find citrus bioflavonoids and more in Multiva Advanced, our multivitamin designed for Kiwi men and women.

Supporting Vitamin C Absorption

One key role of citrus bioflavonoids is supporting vitamin C absorption and activity. Vitamin C supplements typically contain ascorbic acid, but when combined with naturally occurring bioflavonoids (as found in fruits and vegetables), absorption and antioxidant support.

Foods rich in flavonoids include brightly coloured fruits and vegetables (especially skins), herbs, cocoa, red wine (grape skins), green tea, and nuts and seeds.

Other benefits of citrus bioflavonoids

Circulation & Vein Support

Bioflavonoids are often used to support circulation and capillary strength. Those found in citrus peels have been associated with supporting healthy veins and capillaries, contributing to general vascular health and comfort.

Seasonal Wellbeing

Bioflavonoids such as quercetin have been studied for their natural antioxidant and soothing properties. They may support the body's response to seasonal or environmental irritants.

General Immune Support

Bioflavonoids are widely recognised for their role in supporting immune health and the body’s natural recovery processes, particularly when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Cognitive Health

Some preliminary research suggests certain citrus bioflavonoids may support cognitive health and normal brain function as we age, though more research is needed in this area.

Bone Health

Early research has looked into how flavonoids may support bone structure and strength, particularly during life stages where bone density may naturally decline.

Metabolic Support

Citrus bioflavonoids are also being explored for their role in metabolic processes and supporting healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels already within the normal range.
