As we are now into Winter, it’s important to ensure that your health and wellbeing are top priority. A fair number of people want to stay indoors where it’s warm and comfortable, but did you know that a brisk half our walk outside on a cold day can do you the world of good? Not only are you taking in fresh air, but you are also soaking up vitamin D, a powerhouse when it comes to supporting your immune function!
Often missing in public health discussions at this time of year is the role of nutrition in supporting the optimal function of the immune system. This is not only concerning but surprising given the importance that nutrition plays in immune function is well established. Several vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and trace elements play important roles in supporting both all aspects of our immune system.
Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E and folate, along with zinc, selenium, magnesium and copper are all important nutrients and with the exception of vitamin E and magnesium, each have also been granted health claims in the European Union for contributing to the normal function of the immune system.
Other nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, such as resveratrol, also support an effective immune system, specifically by helping to support the inflammatory response.
So apart from topping up on vitamins what else can we do?
Get a good night’s sleep – our body does the majority of its repair work whilst we are in deep restful sleep. This isn’t possible for all of us, all the time, so ensuring you get a good 7-8 hours of sleep as often as possible helps your body to fight off infections.
Limit alcohol – I always look for options that don’t include this suggestion, however, on this occasion, it is sound advice. Alcohol can have a negative impact on sleep, inflammation, gut biome as well as nutrient levels in the body. Limiting your alcohol intake when you are at higher risk of catching something helps you to stay fighting git.
Eat well – lots of dark leafy greens, a range of brightly coloured fruit and vege and the limiting of dairy, sugar, and processed foods, all help the body to stay at its fighting best.
With these elements in mind it’s important to note that supplementation with micronutrients, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants is a safe, effective and low-cost way to help eliminate nutritional gaps and support optimal immune function.
Our immune support pack gives you your full dose of vitamin D, antioxidant resveratrol as well as the support of traditional immune support ingredients olive leaf extract and echinacea.
