Keeping up with the latest research
Res-V Ultimate is a product we have been researching over the past couple of years as emerging human studies indicate that there is a case for a higher dose resveratrol , this (along with some caveats) will be explained below. There is undeniably a case for more Grape Skin extract - one of the somewhat unsung heroes in our original Res-V Plus. Since 2005 when I first introduced a resveratrol supplement to New Zealanders, there has been great debate about whether it is purely the resveratrol in red wine OR the other antioxidants found in grape skin that are responsible for the French Paradox (the theory that the better heart health enjoyed by the French is caused by moderate red wine consumption). Regardless of whether science ultimately decides it is solely resveratrol, or the other grape compounds, both of our formulas, Res-V Plus and Res-V Ultimate have got you covered. And we know that all ingredients are associated with significant health benefits. The addition of Grape Seed extract and the large increase in Grape Skin extract, along with more resveratrol, really make this formulation more closely aligned to the red wine story. Why did we use 90mg rather than 100mg (a tidier marketing number)?
The benefits provided by 90mg of resveratrol, as per the results of the DSM studies, were an important part of our decision making with regards to our final Res-V Ultimate formula. DSM’s human research used doses of 30mg, 90mg and 270mg of resveratrol. Most of the benefits were found at lower doses, which is a clear example of the law of diminishing returns. We made a decision to stick with the amounts used in published human studies, as we develop our formulas to have a basis in research.
Why did you increase the capsule size to 500mg?
If the resveratrol concentration in a formulation is significantly increased, but not the capsule size, then quite simply, other ingredients have to be left out, or be used in reduced concentrations. Either way - the product is compromised. We human beings can be a very trusting lot, and we often don’t look at the amounts of ingredients in supplements -just their presence or absence. Remember, the devil is often in the detail! By simply increasing the concentration of a single substance at the expense of other ingredients, we could have kept the same size capsule as Res-V Plus, but it would simply have been a marketing exercise.
How do I choose between Res-V Plus and Res-V Ultimate?
While resveratrol has proven health benefits, and is useful taken once per day, our recommendation (due to bioavailability issues and recent human research) is to use it twice per day (preferably not with high fat meals). Res-V Ultimate has everything that Res-V Plus has, but much more of the key ingredients … and the addition of Grape Seed Extract (with its own unique suite of health benefits). There is research suggesting that the synergy of resveratrol and grape seed extract can be very useful for human health. Res-V Ultimate contains 78% more concentrated herbal, extracts than Res-V Plus, so it is certainly great value when you compare the products. Whichever one you choose, rest assured that both products are excellent formulas that go well beyond just being antioxidants. The individual extracts share both similar health benefits, as well as their own unique benefits that are linked to each particular herb.
